Microsoft is shifting its focus away from the traditional on-premises Exchange Server model towards a cloud-based solution. However, they acknowledge the need for on-premises options for some users. Here's the plan:
Extended Support for Exchange Server 2019: Microsoft will release a final Cumulative Update (CU) for Exchange Server 2019 (CU15) later in 2024. This extends support beyond the original end-of-support date.
Introducing Exchange Server Subscription Edition (Exchange Server SE): In early 2025, Microsoft plans to release a new version called Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE). This will be available for download from the Microsoft 365 admin center and will require a subscription license.
Modern Lifecycle Policy for Exchange Server SE: Unlike previous versions, Exchange Server SE will follow the Modern Lifecycle Policy, which means it won't have a pre-defined end-of-support date. Microsoft will continue providing support as long as there's sufficient user demand.
Focus on Cloud-Based Solutions: Microsoft is clearly prioritizing cloud-based email solutions like Exchange Online within Microsoft 365. They're encouraging users to migrate to the cloud for improved security, scalability, and access to the latest features.
